What our customers say
Q & A with Physio Bart
Why invest in a desk?
Sitting in a chair all day to work harms our health. It gives us pain, reduces our focus, limits our problem solving and sets us up for higher chances of diabetes, cancer, heart disease and obesity down the track.
We spend 6-10 hours a day working at a computer, sitting still. In our lifetime that adds up to ~80,000 hours, or 12 years, just sitting still. We then do our best to get out and get active around work to keep our health on track and counteract the harm of sitting all day. But research shows that although exercising is great for us it doesn't counteract the harm of sitting all day. Like eating veges in the evening after having chocolate all day (a crude analogy but you get the point).
We need to find ways to move more during the day. Not a lot more, just a little bit and often to keep our metabolism going, blood pumping to our brain, joints and muscles.
This is why we have created the Limber Mini and the Limber Life. To set you up with a desk that let's you move more while you work and teach you about Active Resting Floor Postures. We can go from two postures a day, sitting and standing, to 10+ when we bring active resting floor postures into the mix and completely change the game at work by making more movement second nature.
What are Active Resting Floor Postures?
At Limber we are creating a way of living and working where movement happens without conscious effort.
The floor provides the most movement rich environment we have to work from. With the floor we have access to 10+ postural variations, such as kneeling, sitting cross-legged, half kneeling, crouching, squatting, long sitting and more, that we can circulate through each day. These are called Active Resting Floor Postures.
They are called Active resting postures because circulating through these postures throughout the day keeps the muscles in our legs and around our pelvis active (the biggest muscles in our body), maintaining our metabolism, keeping blood flowing to our joints, muscles and brain.
Getting to and from the floor is a predictor of longevity and is a movement that requires balance, flexability and strength, helping us maintain and even strengthen our body. Each time we get to or off the ground we give our nervous system a wake up, sending a jolt of blood to our brain and to our joints and muscles. Between getting down to and up off the floor and ciculating through all the postural varitations on the floor we create a space where more movement and more diversity of movement happens by default, without us even having to think about it.
This makes changing our behaviour much easier than relying on our willpower, setting reminders to move, downloading apps to shut our computer off every 30 minutes and interupt our flow. We can just shift positions and move every time We feel the need without even thinking about it. Just like a normal human.
It is behaviour change made incredibly simple. Building movement into our environment and taking away the conscious effort of movement.
Won't an ergonomic chair fix my problems?
No, let me explain.
Chairs with support for our back, supports for our elbows, cushioning for our butt make moving incredibly hard. They lock us into sitting and are a physical barier to moving more.
They may advertise a new tilt function that lets you 'lean backwards more' and they might feel comfortable to sit in but all this support requires nothing from our body, so our body slows down and prepares for sleep.
Our muscles don't need energy, our nervous system is not stimulated so our metabolism slows down. This creates a lot of challenges for our body when processing stress, sugar and inflammation.
In the moment blood flow reduces to our brain and we experience fatigue, foggy brain, and challenges with focus, problem solving and alertness.
In the medium term we experience pain (welcome to your 30's and 40's) in our low back, neck, shoulders, wrists and a feeling of vulnerability in our body as we loose confidence and second guess our movement. Getting stiff through our shoulders, hips and ankles, and weak through our back and neck.
Later in life these metabolic disturbances increase our chances of experiencing heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and obesity, to name a few that you probably already know all about. "Sitting is the new smoking"... I bet you have heard that before.
Chairs are a health hazard. There is no such thing as an ergonmic chair. A strong statements I know, but from a movement and health perspective, physically they get in the way of movement, they make forming daily movement habits very difficult and there are no scientific health benefits to them (if you want to know more about the history of chairs read this book).
I know giving up chairs and jumping into active resting floor postures can be hard to imagine. This is why I created the 'Working from the floor' course and we now include it in every desk purchase. To give you the confidence and knowledge to give floor postures a go and automatically get more movement in your day.
Over time your confidence and ability will build and you will find yourself moving more and feeling more capable again.
What is Limbers Mission?
At Limber we are on a mission to end back pain, halving it globally by 2050. Back pain is currently the #1 cause of disability in the world and there are simple ways we can reduce this. Moving more at work being a big one.
I founded Limber wanting to prevent unneccesary back pain by getting people moving more through creating a way of living and working where movement happens without conscious effort and people have the skills to prevent back pain and minimise pain if it arrives.
We started by designing what are now broadly accepted as "the world's healthiest desks" originally called this by Professors at UC Berkeley where they are being researched. We have continiued adding resources, courses and new products to our catalogue and will keep this going as we work to find new ways reach our milestone of halving back pain by 2050 globally.
About the Limber Mini
The Limber Mini is a unique ergonomic floor to standing desk, that is effortlessly assembled & adjusted to suit your body.
It comes with my 'working from the floor' posture course to help you move more and transform your workday from painful to pain free.
The Mini is made with love in New Zealand from sustainably forested wood, and comes with Lifetime Warranty, free shipping & 100 day returns.
Why do you sell a stool and sheepskins/cushions/mats?
If you have spent a decade or two sitting in a chair, you might not feel flexible enough to sit directly on the floor and it is uncomfortable.
The Limber stool takes the pressure off your knees and ankles by lifting up your hips and putting your upper body weight through the stool, rather than your legs and ankles.
This makes floor postures comfortable and accessible as you build you ability in them and still get the benefits of moving more.
The sheepskins, cushions and mats do a similar thing, create an inviting and comfortable environment for you to work from. And if you like that environment you will want to work from it, again taking the conscious effort out of making healthy choices.
